A vintage Japanese shikishi painted on silk mounted on a cardboard base. The floral composition is placed in the lower left and upper right corners, leaving the central field open. This asymmetrical layout is characteristic of the Taishō–early Shōwa period. The roses and foliage are rendered with dense brushwork on silk, with a soft matte texture. In the upper right area, the work bears an artist’s signature and seal.
This shikishi belongs to decorative painting traditions of the first half of the twentieth century, combining Western-influenced floral motifs with a Japanese corner-focused composition. The silk surface shows natural ageing appropriate for the period, preserved without intervention.
Style note
Decorative silk painting with an asymmetrical floral layout and dense brushwork.
