Japanese shikishi with an ink painting of bamboo and stone, executed in the suibokuga technique. The work is dated by the artist to 1954 (Shōwa). The composition follows the tradition of literati painting, where natural forms are expressed through a free monochrome brush. An inscription, signature and seals are placed along the right side.
Meaning note
In Japanese culture, bamboo often symbolizes flexible strength — the ability to bend without breaking — while stone represents stability and calm resilience. Together they form a balanced image of inner steadiness: a firm foundation combined with gentle, enduring flexibility.
Style note
Free monochrome brush in the suibokuga manner, consistent with twentieth-century literati aesthetics.
Condition
Good vintage condition. Vintage works may show natural signs of age (light toning, small fiber creases, gentle edge wear), so please review the photos carefully.
