This original Japanese shikishi (traditional square board, approx. 24×27 cm) depicts Kannon (観音) — the Japanese form of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
The figure is shown in a white robe with soft red lining, standing on a pedestal and holding a basket of offerings — a gentle and devotional portrayal, likely inspired by temple statues.
The painting is signed Gasenjo (雅仙女), an art name that combines 雅 (elegant), 仙 (sage), and 女 (woman). The red seal shows Gasen (雅仙), confirming the artist’s personal mark.
The inscription 彫味 translates as “Charm of Carving,” suggesting the artist’s admiration for the carved statue form of Kannon.
Executed in the nihonga style of the Showa era (mid‑20th century, 1950s–60s), the work carries the sketch‑like elegance of the Shijō school tradition, infused with a serene spiritual tone.
Painted on authentic Japanese shikishi board (ivory tone with natural fibers, no decorative border).
