This rare limited edition collotype print reproduces an early masterpiece by the Japanese artist Kosen (古泉), known as “Koi no Kosen” for his celebrated depictions of koi carp.
Produced by Daikoku Kōgeisha Co., Ltd. in mid-20th century Japan, this special series was created so that, decades after completing the original, Kosen could personally revisit and enhance his own work.
The collotype process faithfully preserves the fine tonal gradations and composition of the original painting. Each piece in the series was then hand-finished by Kosen himself — he strengthened certain brushstrokes, added shimmering gofun highlights and gold details, and adjusted subtle tonal transitions.
Finally, he signed each work and applied his rare square seal reading 「古泉七十以后作」 (“Kosen – created after age seventy”), marking it as part of his mature creative period.
Only a very small number of these collotype editions were ever produced in Japan during the Showa era — often just a few dozen copies for collectors. This makes surviving examples exceptionally scarce.
Mounted on an original Japanese shikishi board (approx. 24×27 cm) with a gold border. The reverse bears the printed mark of Daikoku Kōgeisha, confirming the origin of the high-quality board.
A highly collectible fusion of Japanese printmaking and hand-painted artistry, combining the precision of collotype with the individuality of the artist’s own brush.
