Japanese shikishi in ink from the early–mid Shōwa period. The word mushin is written in a free calligraphic line, referring to the Zen idea of an unburdened, calm state of mind. Below it is a small simplified figure drawn in a playful Zen manner. Its rounded form resembles a little monkey, though it remains an intentionally abstract character rather than a depiction of an animal. The front includes an artist’s signature and a red seal.

Meaning note

In Zen, the expression “monkey mind” describes a lively, easily distracted mental state. Mushin refers to the moment when this inner “monkey” becomes quiet and naturally balanced. The small figure — gently echoing the form of a monkey — visualises this idea: a light, spontaneous shape suggesting calm presence and soft focus.

Style note

Zen-style Shōwa ink work with an abstract, playful figure and a free brush line.

Condition

Good vintage condition. Vintage works may show natural signs of age (light toning, small fiber creases, gentle edge wear), so please review the photos carefully.
