This original Japanese sumi‑e ink painting on a classic shikishi board (24×27 cm) depicts the iconic Three Wise Monkeys – “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”
The motif of the three monkeys (三猿 san’en) has deep roots in Japanese and Chinese philosophy, embodying the idea of living a life of virtue by guarding one’s mind, words, and actions. It became a central image of moral reflection, often linked to Zen Buddhism and the teachings of Confucius, and was a favorite subject for painters of the Maruyama‑Shijō school and later sumi‑e traditions.
This painting reflects that lineage: its bold, fluid brushwork shows the influence of masters like Mori Sosen and his circle, who elevated monkeys into a poetic and symbolic theme. At the same time, the composition has the simplicity of mid‑Showa ink art — created for contemplation and as an auspicious gift.
The piece is signed and sealed by the artist, with a calligraphic inscription that reinforces the philosophical spirit. The board has a delicate gold border and visible natural age spots (foxing), which only enhance its vintage wabi‑sabi character.
