A serene original shikishi (Japanese art board) depicting white lilies in full bloom, their petals outlined in black ink and highlighted with soft touches of green and yellow. The artist’s red seal (hanko) marks the piece, connecting it to the same cohesive collection as the cactus and snail paintings by the painter known as Ikkū (一空).
The name Ikkū can be translated as “One Sky” – a poetic art-name that evokes stillness, openness, and a contemplative mood. This sense of meditative calm flows through his brushstrokes, transforming a simple flower study into something quietly profound.
Executed in the post-war nihonga/etegami style (Shōwa period, 1950–80s), this shikishi embodies the harmony of line and color that defines Japanese aesthetics. It is part of a series of hand-painted shikishi by Ikkū, each celebrating a different natural motif.
