Alongside the painting is a haiku:

咲きかゝる
花ちいさく
遊蝶花

“A blossom about to bloom—
small flower,
and a butterfly plays.”

The poem is marked 史朗句 (Shirō-ku) — indicating a verse by (or after) the haiku poet Shirō (史朗).

Signed by the painter Ikkū (一空) – meaning “One Sky” – and stamped with his red seal. The work is not painted on a standard shikishi board, but on washi paper mounted on backing board – a technique often used for finer, softer brushwork.
