The bold inscription 面壁九年 (Menpeki Kunen) reads “Nine Years Facing the Wall,” referencing Daruma’s unwavering determination.

Signed Nyūshōbōmon Eijū (入生坊門 永就), a Zen monk-artist, and sealed with two red stamps – the lower with his name Eijū, the upper with a playful Zen motto “Smile at the Gate.”
