Ritual Scroll of the Divine Protector – Ink on Paper, Late Edo Period
A rare and powerful devotional scroll from the late Edo period, depicting a sacred triad: a central deity, flanked by a wise elder and a warrior. Drawn in expressive ink lines on handmade Japanese washi paper, the scene reflects the harmony of divine order, wisdom, and strength.
The inscription refers to the god as:
“He who moves heaven and earth yet remains unmoved in wisdom — the one who gives life to the world. This is the true Myōjin.”
The scroll is signed by Fujiwara no Nagatsuna, chief priest (kamunushi) of the Kumin Shrine in Tanba province.
The central figure merges attributes of Hachiman, Myōken, and celestial deities. The flanking figures — one scholarly, the other martial — evoke the classical balance of knowledge and strength under divine guidance.
A spiritual and historically resonant piece of Japanese sacred art.
